Jonas Parello-Plesner (born 21 November 1973 [1] ) is a Danish security policy expert and director of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, [2] which was founded by the former Prime Minister of Denmark and former Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Parello-Plesner is a former diplomat for the Kingdom of Denmark. He has worked in China, the USA and Europe. With Mathieu Duchatel, he co-authored the book China's Strong Arm: Protecting Citizens and Assets Abroad for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London [3]. Parello-Plesner is half Danish and French, and his paternal grandparents fled from Spain to France during the Spanish Civil War . [4]
He has commented on TV for CNN, Fox News, Euronews, DR1, DR2 and TV 2 News and has regularly written about Chinese and American foreign policy for the Financial Times, [5] Newsweek [6] and Berlingske , among others. [7] In 2018, he was with the French Navy on freedom of navigation maneuvers in the South China Sea, which he has written about for the Wall Street Journal, [8] The American Interest [9] and on the radio for P1. [10]
Parello-Plesner is also associated with the think tank The German Marshall Fund in Washington DC [11] and has previously worked for the Hudson Institute think tank, also in Washington. From 2013 to 2017, he lived in Washington and, as a Danish diplomat, helped open Danish cooperation with the Donald Trump administration after the election in 2016. Previously, he worked for the European Council on Foreign Relations [12]
